We use unconventional toppings with this Green Pizza with Broccoli, Arugula, and Pesto and bake it on personal flatbread or na'an bread. Top your bread with pesto, arugula, broccoli, and mozzarella cheese. It's that simple! This hearty and healthy family-friendly lunch or dinner green pizza is ready in less than 20 minutes!
Green Pizza with Broccoli, Arugula and Pesto is one of my family's favorite pizzas to eat because it comes with guilt-free addiction. Nutrient-packed broccoli, arugula, and pesto are not just healthy, but delicious, sweet, and zesty all at the same time.
It's a favorite go-to quick dinner when we are feeling super lazy or have little time. This along with plain cheese, margherita, spinach and feta, and pepperoni flatbread pizzas. But this green pizza recipe I am sharing with you today is one of my family's favorites because it's pizza (our absolute favorite) and it's healthy!
Dinner is never easier than when you have delicious na'an bread and cheese. That's really all you need to make a personal na'an bread pizza. The rest of the toppings can be almost any vegetables, spices, herbs, and meats you have on hand. Flatbread pizzas are great for cleaning your fridge out of vegetables, cheeses, and pizza sauces that are about to go bad. You can be as creative as you want and make them different every time. Na'an bread pizzas are simple and fast and can make a full dinner for your family in less than 20 minutes.
We always make sure to have na'an bread stored in bulk in the freezer for this reason. But you can absolutely make green pizza using store bought or homemade pizza dough and make one big pizza pie. We just love how na'an bread quickly crisps in the oven, especially using a pizza stone.
I also have a broccoli-loving baby. I mean a serious broccoli-loving baby. It is one of the only things she has eaten all week, and I am fine with that! This green pizza with broccoli is perfect for her, because she loves pizza too and can easily eat it on her own (a task she is obsessed with being able to do this week).
We like making personal pizzas in my house because everyone has slightly different preferences when it comes to vegetables. For the kids, we use less arugula and pesto and chop the broccoli into smaller pieces. We find the smaller the vegetables are chopped not only makes them easier to chew, but less likely the kids will notice they are eating them at all. We can hide the broccoli and arugula better in this green pizza if it's cut smaller and then topped with lots of yummy mozzarella cheese.
what you'll need to make a green pizza
To make this quick and simple healthy green pizza, you will need:
- flatbread, na'an, or pizza dough
- pesto, homemade or jarred
- fresh arugula
- steamed broccoli chopped into small pieces
- shredded mozzarella cheese
We typically use na'an for all of our flatbread pizzas, but you can use any other type of flatbread. You can also use a store bought or homemade pizza dough. If you choose pizza dough, feel free to make one big pizza or separate it into little pizzas, like these mini party pizzas. If you use a raw pizza dough, follow the instructions on the package for how long to cook it. However, pre-bake just the dough for 10 minutes less than the package states, so that you are only cooking with the toppings on for 10 minutes.
I also recommend chopping the broccoli into itty bitty pieces so that they steam quickly in about 5 minutes. Or, buy a bag you can steam in the microwave for 5 minutes. Small broccoli pieces will also make it easier for the kids to eat.
If you're unsure about whether you like arugula or if it's a little too zesty for your kids, you can replace it with spinach. But since it's cooked into the green pizza, it does not fully have its usual peppery taste.
how to make green pizza with broccoli, arugula, and pesto
Making your green pizza takes not even 20 minutes, even with preparation. You'll only dirty one baking sheet or pizza stone and one pot if you're steaming your broccoli on the stove and ZERO pots if you're using a microwave steamable bag. Yay for easy clean up!
Here are the steps:
First, chop the broccoli into little pieces and steam for about 5 minutes. It should be bright green and just starting to soften. If you cook for much longer it will turn to mush. Remember that the broccoli will continue to bake in the oven, so we just want it to begin to soften in the steamer.
Second, spread a little bit of pesto on the bread. You can use a lot or a little, the choice is yours! Remember though, that pesto has a strong flavor and a little goes a long way. Then add a portion of arugula.
Now add some broccoli bits. Top with cheese and just a whee pinch of sea salt. Putting the cheese on last will help to keep your toppings from falling off.
Bake your green pizza for 10-12 minutes, until the cheese begins to brown.
Now cut, serve, and enjoy your tasty green pizza with broccoli, arugula, and pesto!
Green Pizza with Broccoli, Arugula and Pesto
- 2 cups chopped broccoli
- 4 na'an slices or other flatbread
- ¼ - ½ cup pesto
- 1 cup arugula
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- sea salt taste
- Preheat the oven to 400°. Steam broccoli in a vegetable steamer on the stove for 5 minutes or microwave a steamable bag of broccoli. Make sure broccoli is chopped into small pieces before steaming.
- Add flatbread to a baking sheet or pizza stone and spread with about ½-1 tablespoon of pesto, depending on your preference. Add ¼ cup arugula, then ½ cup cooked broccoli.
- Sprinkle with ½ cup mozzarella and a pinch of sea salt. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until cheese is melted.
kid-friendly green pizza
While green pizza is already kid-friendly, if your kids are really difficult about eating their greens you may have to play around with how much arugula and broccoli you use. Skip the pesto and arugula completely and stick with tiny pieces of broccoli instead. Another idea is to use chopped spinach instead of the arugula. Always put whatever veggies you choose on first and then the cheese, so they are mostly covered. It's all about trickery right?!
Like most other pizzas, store your green pizza in the fridge and keep it for around 5 days. It warms very well in the toaster and the microwave.
