There are 3 easy ways to get your Instant Pot brown rice to turn out perfect. First, the pressure cook timing needs to be right. Second, the liquid to rice ratio needs to be spot on, and third, you need to let the pressure naturally release. My instructions here for pressure cooking brown rice does all three of these. Brown rice can be substituted for white rice in nearly every recipe to make your meals a little more wholesome.

Grains like brown rice, farro, barley and basmati rice, wild rice and white rice are great to make in large batches and use throughout the week for various dinners or meal prepping lunches. We add Instant Pot farro to salads and grain bowls. Instant Pot barley is amazing in this beef barley soup and chicken barley soup. And white rice is wonderful in Instant Pot chicken and rice soup, in burritos and grain bowls for lunch and so much more. Or use brown rice to make vegetarian stuffed peppers.

Why This Recipe Works

  • No more hovering over the stove for nearly an hour stirring and watching.
  • You can set it and forget it and still get perfect brown rice everytime- no worrying about boiling over rice!
  • Use the pot-in-pot method, too.

Ingredients

You'll need long grain brown rice and either water or broth.

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Place the brown rice in a colander and rinse thoroughly under cool running water until water runs clear. Put rinsed rice in the pressure cooker.
  2. Pour water or broth over the rice. Stir. Close and seal the pressure cooker lid. Set to pressure cook or manual on normal for 15 minutes. Let the pressure naturally release for at least 10 minutes before manually releasing the remaining pressure.
  3. Open the lid and fluff rice with a fork. Serve warm with your favorite lunch or dinner or store for later use.

Using The Pot-In-Pot Method

  1. Pour 1 cup of water into the inner pot of the pressure cooker. Put thoroughly rinsed rice into a cake pan that fits inside your pressure cooker. Place the cake pan on a silicone sling and put into the inner pot (or on top of a trivet with handles).
  2. Pour water or broth into the cake pan with the rice.

Chef's Tips

  1. If your Instant Pot is sensitive to burning rice and grains, use the pot-in-pot method.
  2. Add any desired seasoning to the rice before pressure cooking. Fresh and dried herbs, spice blends, onions and garlic can all be added to give your rice more flavor.

How To Store

Store cooked brown rice in the refrigerator for up to 7 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Recipe FAQs

What Is The Ratio Of Rice To Liquid In An Instant Pot?

For brown rice, you should use 1 and ¼ cups of liquid per 1 cup of rice.

How Long Does Brown Rice Take To Pressure Cook?

Brown rice needs 15 minutes of pressure cook time, plus a natural release of 10-15 minutes. You can also let the pressure naturally release completely with no change in how the rice turns out.
