Ingredients

To make hamburger buns in a bread machine you need simple ingredients:

Burger Dough

  • Bread flour
  • Melted butter (unsalted)
  • Egg
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Yeast
  • Warm water

Topping

  • Egg wash: milk and egg
  • Sesame seeds, or other topping such as onion flakes or garlic flakes

Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Add the warm water, bread flour, sugar, salt, egg, melted butter and yeast to the bread machine pan in the order your brand of machine recommends.
  2. Set to the dough cycle and let the machine do the work. Check to ensure the dough is soft and tacky while it's kneading and add more water or flour in small increments if needed.
  3. Shape the dough. Once the cycle completes, remove the dough and flatten it into a rectangle on a lightly oiled surface. Divide into 12 equal pieces. Roll the dough pieces into smooth balls and set ½ inches apart on a a lightly oiled baking sheet. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 30-40 minutes, until doubled in size.
  4. Remove the plastic wrap. Stir 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of milk to make the egg wash. Gently brush the dough balls with the egg wash, being careful not to deflate them. Sprinkle generously with sesame seeds.
  5. Transfer to an oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden brown and the internal temperature reaches about 190 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. Remove the hamburger buns from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before setting on a cooling rack.

Chef's Tips

  • Use bread flour for the softest texture.
  • Instead of sesame seeds, use garlic flakes or onion flakes, or skip the toppings to make plain hamburger buns.
  • Make sliders- divide the dough into 16-18 rolls.

How To Store

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months in a freezer-safe storage container.

Recipe FAQs

Can I Use All-Purpose Flour Instead Of Bread Flour?

Yes, but bread flour provides the best texture and crumb.

Why Are My Hamburger Buns Dense?

Dense buns usually means either too much flour was used, the dough did not rise long enough or the yeast was expired.

What Type Of Yeast Is Best?

Instant yeast or bread machine yeast is the preferred choice, followed by active dry yeast. All will be good to use in the bread maker and do not require proofing first.
