This frozen pińa colada is made in a blender to create a refreshingly sweet summer cocktail. Made with rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream, the pińa colada is a popular Caribbean style cocktail great for sipping poolside or beachside. It's the ultimate beach vacation cocktail!

They are fantastic when relaxing at home too, especially when enjoying a grilled dinner in the summer heat.

Serve piña coladas as a refreshing accompaniment to summer dinners, like grilled lemon-lime chicken, with a summer berry salad, an appetizer of crispy rice with spicy tuna or alongside pineapple mango pico de gallo.

This recipe makes 2 large 14 ounce piña coladas, or 4 small 7 oz piña coladas.

Only 2 ounces of each large cocktail is alcohol and the rest is made of ice, cream, and pineapple. Frozen piña coladas have about a 13% ABV.

Yield: 2 large 14oz piña coladas

I make all of my frozen cocktails using my Instant Pot Ace Nova Cooking Blender. This amazing appliance can make anything from soup to nut milk to smoothies and ice cream.

Frozen cocktails in the Ace Nova come out smooth and frothy in just seconds. You can make your frozen beverages, like I do this frozen strawberry margarita, using both the pulse or crushed ice settings.

And if you have a traditional blender, that works too— simply blend the ingredients until the drink is smooth.

Ingredients

For this frozen piña colada recipe, you need white rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice and ice. Maraschino cherries and fresh pineapple slices are recommended for garnishing.

In a pinch, you can replace the coconut cream with full fat coconut milk. But you will lose the thickness and richness that comes with coconut cream.

What is the Best Rum for Pińa Coladas?

The best rum for a pińa colada is a clear or white rum. White rum is often used to create cocktails where a bold rum flavor is not necessary. In the piña colada, pineapple and coconut are the stars so you don't want to overpower those fruity flavors by using a dark or spiced rum.

You can read more about the different types of rum and their uses here.

Step-By-Step Directions

  • Add all ingredients to the blender in the order listed (rum, pineapple juice, coconut cream, ice). If adding pineapple chunks, add them to the blender before the ice.
  • If using an Instant Cooking Blender, pulse on speed 10 for 40 seconds. For other blenders, pulse for 30-60 seconds or until ice is completely crushed and drink is frothy.
  • Pour into chilled glasses and serve garnished with pineapple slices and a maraschino cherry.

Expert Tips

  • For the best frozen piña colada, start with a quality white rum. While top shelf isn't necessary, a good quality rum will make your cocktail taste the best it can be.
  • Add a handful of fresh or frozen pineapple to the drink for added flavor and thickness.
  • If using the Instant Pot Ace Blenders, make sure to add the ingredients in the recommended order for cold beverages. This means you should add the liquids first, then the fruit, and the ice last.
  • To keep frozen cocktails cold, chill the glasses in the fridge for 15-30 minutes before serving.
  • Blend the piña colada as close to serving as possible. Store extras in the fridge and stir well or reblend prior to serving.
