This is the BEST Philly Cheesesteak Recipe! I did a lot of searching for cheesesteaks to replicate the ones I was used to enjoying having lived close to Philadelphia. But was repeatedly disappointed so we have finally come up with our own. Shaved steak, peppers, onions and provolone cheese are stuffed into a buttered toasted hoagie roll in less than 30 minutes.
You can make these sandwiches on an outdoor griddle or in a frying pan on the stove with a premade seasoning blend or my homemade cheesesteak seasoning. My husband and girls make cheesesteaks on the grill often- it's their daddy daughter bonding experience and it's so cute!

Why You'll Love My Philly Cheesesteak Recipe
- I use the best, most flavorful homemade seasoning blend the replicates a classic cheesesteak straight out of Philadelphia!
- Cheesesteaks are quick and easy - they take only 20 minutes to prepare and cook!
The Best Cut Of Beef For Philly Cheesesteaks
I use a package of shaved sirloin steak but you can buy sirloin steaks and cut them into thin slices. Petite sirloin, top sirloin and even flank steak all work. Buy whatever is least expensive if you're on a budget! They key is to slicing it as thin as you can get it.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs shaved sirloin steak (or sirloin steak that's been sliced thinly by you)
- 2 large green bell peppers
- 1 large sweet onion
- Cheesesteak seasoning blend: 2 tsp each of chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, black pepper and salt
- 5 hoagie rolls
- 20 slices provolone cheese
- ½ cup butter

How To Make Philly Cheesesteaks
- In a small bowl combine the chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, black pepper and salt. If not using shaved steak, thinly slice the steak fillet and toss the strips with the seasoning blend.
- Preheat a pan or grill over medium-high heat. Add the butter. When melted, add the steak, pepper and onion slices and cook until steak reaches 165℉ internally and peppers and onions are tender-crisp, about 6-7 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside while preparing the hoagie rolls (see below).
How To Prepare The Hoagie Sandwiches
Alright, so we call them sub rolls in my part of New Jersey (it's one of those big controversial topics!). But all things aside..
- Once you have the beef, peppers and onions cooked, slice open the hoagies. Remove the filling to a bowl. Place the rolls insides down on the pan or grill in the same spot you melted the butter and cooked the filling. Toast for 1-2 minutes or until crispy. Flip over and layer each roll with 4 slices of provolone cheese so that it gets warm and melts slightly. Remove to a serving platter or plates.
- Divide steak, peppers and onions between the rolls. Serve with your favorite side, like crispy french fries or onion rings.
Enjoy!
Kristina's Tip
- For the quickest preparation, use shaved steak packages.
- We love making these all summer on our grill for family and freinds. Use a big cookie sheet to serve family-style while dining outside in the warm summer air!

How To Store Cheesesteaks
Fridge: For the best quality, store the pepper, onion and meat mix separate from the buns and cheese and prepare uneaten sandwiches when ready to eat. If you've already assembled the sandwiches, wrap them in foil and keep in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Reheating: Remove from the foil and reheat in a toaster, oven or air fryer for about 5 minutes at 260 degrees Fahrenheit.
Freezer: Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and put into a freezer-safe storage bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw them in the fridge overnight or in the microwave using the defrost setting. To get them crispy and warm again, follow the reheating instructions above.
Enjoy!
